Golden Promise is a heritage barley variety developed in the 1960s, prized in Scotch whisky for yielding a rich, full-bodied spirit with a creamy mouthfeel and gentle malty sweetness. Though modern barley varieties commonly provide higher alcohol yields (due to higher starch content and efficiencies in the farming process), Golden Promise barley contributes to highly flavourful single malts.
Iconic and long ago releases from Macallan, highly treasured in Singapore today, often leveraged Golden Promise barley to much acclaim. Today a number of integrity-focused distilleries such as Benromach and Ardnamurchan have rekindled use of this wonderful barley. Yamazaki Golden Promise (Tsukuriwake Selection) recently garnered buzz amongst Singapore enthusiasts.
At a recent whisky festival in Singapore, a Golden Promise five year old Ardnamurchan bottled as a distillery owner Adelphi independent bottling showed immediate depth and richness on the nose. It was a festival highlight.
