I can't add any meaningful commentary to Springbank - really, what hasn't already been said? However, I am sure most of us did not know all this information.
The Viking Drag: In 1093 (or 1098 depending on the source), Norwegian King Magnus Barelegs (Magnus Barefoot) and the King of Scots agreed that Magnus could rule all the western islands off Scotland's coast—defined strictly as land that could be navigated around by boat.
To claim the large Kintyre peninsula, Magnus stood at the helm of his dragon ship while his men hauled the vessel across the narrow, roughly 1.6 km strip of dry land separating West Loch Tarbert (Atlantic side) and East Loch Tarbert (Loch Fyne side).
Magnus technically fulfilled the agreement, making Kintyre a Norwegian-controlled "mainland island" until it was returned to Scotland in 1266.
Historic Name: Campbeltown was originally called Kinlochkilkerran (Head of the Loch) before being renamed in the 17th century by the Earl of Argyll, chief of Clan Campbell.
Concorde Connection: Campbeltown Airport at Machrihanish features one of Europe's longest runways (over 3 kilometers). It was historically used as a backup emergency diversion airfield during early test flights of the supersonic Concorde.
High Park Farm: Paul McCartney bought the isolated High Park Farm in 1966. Following the breakup of The Beatles in 1970, he and his late wife Linda retreated there with their family to escape the pressures of fame and embrace a simpler rural life. Because of the deep family ties to the area, a memorial garden dedicated to Linda McCartney was established in nearby Campbeltown.
Danger: Cows are statistically the most dangerous animals on the Kintyre Peninsula.
